After enjoying a day in the sun, five Italian
men were watching the sunset over the perfectly manicured lawns
of a golf course. Discussions of business, families and life filled
the table as good food and fine wine were passed throughout the
evening. Stories of summer nights in Italy filled the table. The
traditions of homemade Italian wine, freshly baked bread, Nonna's
homemade tomato sauce and olive oil freshly pressed that day were
remembered and cherished.
Italian traditions that have been passed from
generation to generation are what sparked the first annual Gelato
Cup Golf Tournament. Celebrating the traditions from home, bringing
together friends, family and giving back to the community is where
it all began.
The Gelato Cup is now celebrating it's 11th
year and has become an event we are all very proud to support.
What started as "just another golf tournament" has now become
the most anticipated tournament of the season. Now sold out year
after year, the waiting list continues to get longer after each
event.
All proceeds from the Gelato Cup are committed
to the Prostate Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital. Last year for
our 10th anniversary celebration, the Gelato Cup announced it had
reached the $1,000,000 mark for total funds raised to date. Moving
into 2010 we are on year three of a five year $500,000 commitment
to build a new Early Detection Screening Centre at the hospital.
The Screening Centre will be used to for early detection of not only
prostate cancer but other cancers and different
forms of heart disease.
So every year the event grows, the excitement
builds and the traditions continue. The difference now is instead
of five gentlemen enjoying a campari over pristine greens at a
golf course we have 200 friends over looking the perfect greens
at our home, Eagles Nest Golf Club.
Thank you for your continued support and helping
us carry on the Italian traditions of family, friends and giving
back to the community. |
